How anti-social behavior can help your negotiations

Have you ever Googled someone? Of course you have.

I’ve Googled the names of people who applied to babysit my kids or responded to ads I posted to sell items on Craigslist. You can learn a lot about a person with 30 seconds of Internet research.

Sellers and their agents know how to use the Internet, too. If you reveal motivations and other personal details on your social-media channels when buying a home, that information could show up in a seller’s Google search and hurt your negotiating position.

Consider what would happen if you posted to Facebook about how you’re running out of time to find a new house. If sellers saw this information after you made an offer on their listing, do you think they’d be more or less willing to come down on their price?

Social media has given us more ways to share information than ever before, but some things are best kept private. Avoid posting information about your home search or real estate transaction to ensure you don’t weaken your negotiating position.
